The many ramblings of Courtney! Life as I see, hear, smell, and taste it. Even though I'm blind, deaf, can't smell and wasn't born with a tongue. I kid, I kid.
My personal favorite is when they do the double v which makes it look like a w. I always get caught with that and then have to put it in again. Still eventually when the spammers decide its time to hit the oddyssey in force you'll probably see it there too. In the mean time; however, I'll keep it easy. If only to keep from upsetting courtney.
I have to take multiple tries most of the time to get it right...I keep hoping they build in some sort of "dummy meter" and make it easier with each attempt......something like.....
It still doesn't stop the manual spammers who feel the need to leave comments like "Come see my blog!" or other banal stuff like that. Good thing is hosting programs like wordpress or movable type use a filter to remove spam, although they aren't 100% reliable. Sadly, the word verification is just a necessary evil we will have to deal with.
Then I just got so tired of deleting the spam, I went ahead and added it to my site.
So, I get less comments maybe, but that way, I can just assume that people are reading and can't be bothered to leave a comment. Suddenly, in my mind, I am way more popular than I used to be!
Will say this: not all verification images are created equal. The ones seen in Jamie & Indie's blogs are legible, where that's not the case on some sites... I've been rejected on submissions more important than blog replies by illegible images. I think the ones on Craig's List are the most legible... and kinda funny when strung together because they're dictionary words.
Oh, and at least the 'spam' posts seen around here are in English. The ones I was getting in the guestbook of one of my sites were in Asian characters. Best of luck to you, young miss, that the dealers never find your blog... :)
addendum: Today at my tech support job I dealt with someone whose browser forgot how to handle image files. She was having the issue obvious to this thread: a site wanted verification by retyping the 5-digit number found in an image before she could complete login, and all she saw was the "a-JPG-lives-here" marker.

amen! I hate those stupid letters when I'm trying to think of a good male enhancement link to leave in the comment box.

It would be nicer if there were a way to allow the blog owner to comment without having to go through the spam check.

Amen, Sister!
I have a hard enough time just straight typing and I have a harder time reading those crooked letters to copy.
Sometimes, with blogs I feel I have a contribution to make to the discussion, I just give up when it gets too complicated for me to comment.
Oh, by the way, this is really me, not an auto generated message.Although, if you want to buy one of my books....(Spam content deleted).

The worst ones are like rnmmr, in flowing cursive, and the letters are all the same color.
Peace,

I ran a horrible post about comment spammers recently. They attacked me hard.
But I kind of agree with you. The word verification thing is a pain in the ass. That's why I just attack the spammers. They deserve it.
